How to Use Linkedin | Linkedin Marketing Strategy

Linkedin is a great social media platform that can help grow your business, but people are not as familiar with the site as they are with say a Facebook or Twitter.  We are going to show you how to use Linkedin to expand your business, and discuss why it has the potential to be a much greater driver of business than either Facebook or Twitter.

First, let’s look at Linkedin and discover why it pays to have a Linkedin marketing strategy.  The average annual income of a Linkedin user is by far the highest of all the social media sites.  In addition, a large percentage of Linkedin users are decision makers for their company.  What does this mean?  It means that Linkedin is a place where you will find people who have money, and people who have the authority to spend that money.  That’s a good pond to fish in.

Next, let’s look at how Linkedin is set up.  Most social media sites frown upon business related activities.  If the sites don’t frown on it, often times users do.  People go to Facebook to keep up to date with friends and whatnot first.  The opposite is true on Linkedin.  Everyone there is networking for business.  Business related discussions dominate the site, and it is expected that you discuss business on Linkedin.  That’s what the site is for.  This is great for people wondering how to used Linkedin for business, it’s set up to be used that way.

So now that we know why we should want to use Linkedin, let’s take a look at how to use Linkedin.  Today we are going to concentrate on your profile page, and optimizing your Linkedin profile.

Your profile on Linkedin tells a lot about you.  You can list your current jobs, past jobs, specialties, education, a summary of your current position and more.  Be sure to completely fill out your profile.  When completing your profile, though, let’s implement a Linkedin marketing strategy.

For this strategy, we should be aware that Linkedin has a search engine feature.  So not only are we optimizing for Google, but for this Linkedin search engine.  For that search engine to pick up your profile, you want to have keywords included in various parts of your profile.

Under edit your name, be sure to include these keywords in your headline.  For your current job, include your keywords.  For your summary and specialties, include those keywords as well.  Even in completing your past jobs, if you can work your keywords in there too, that is great.  This is going to help you show up for your chosen keyword in a Linkedin search.  In addition, it will bleed over into Google too (be sure to add your site URL, having it on a page with highly related content doesn’t hurt).

The second part of our Linkedin marketing strategy is to optimize your actual profile URL.  You can customize this URL.  Many people don’t know this, so chances are you can get your keywords as your Linkedin URL.  Simply go to your profile page.  Where it shows your profile URL, located right next to the title “Public Profile” click on edit.  Go ahead and edit your URL, making it an exact match for your primary keyword or phrase.

We’ll be looking in more detail about how to use Linkedin in the near future, so check back in.
